Doorstep Discoveries
Like guides everywhere, the worldwide Lockdown and the order to stay local led to a surprising and pleasant side effect – the re-discovery of my own backyard, a place I spent hardly any time during the high season. That “go home and stay local” order presented a great opportunity to pick up the camera phone to take a renewed look at my home town of Bedford in England. So here are a few of my Doorstep Discoveries.
Bunyan's Mead Cottages
Author and rebel preacher John Bunyan would have walked past most of these cottages every day. He was born in 1688, but incredibly, these beautiful half-timbered dwellings date back to between the 13th and 17th centuries!
The local boy made good was born here in Elstow, just outside Bedford. In his wild youth, before he found God, he annoyed his elders by playing games on the village green on a Sunday, cursing and blaspheming.
